The symphony is in five movements, which are grouped into three parts. The work opens with a funeral march that starts with a trumpet fanfare whose rhythm dominates the movement. The songs of Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy’s Magic Horn) by Gustav Mahler are voice-and-piano and voice-and-orchestra settings of German folk poems chosen from a collection of the same name assembled by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano and published by them, in heavily redacted form, between 1805 and 1808. Mahler, Symphony No.5 - Claudio Abbado, Lucerne Festival Orchestra ( 32 ) 1 h 13 min 2004 7+ This orchestra holds within its ranks brilliant international soloists united under Abbado's baton for a memorable performance of the Fifth Symphony. Mahler composed his Fifth Symphony during the summers of 1901 and 1902, spent at his new summer-house looking out over the Wörthersee in central Austria. At its premiere in Cologne in 1904, the symphony was a complete failure with an audience unprepared for its stupendous power and dizzying dramatic scope. The Symphony No. 5 by Gustav Mahler was composed in 1901 and 1902, mostly during the summer months at Mahler's cottage at Maiernigg. Among its most distinctive features are the funereal trumpet solo that opens the work and the frequently performed Adagietto.
